The gastrostomy button is a device held in the stomach by an inflated balloon. A gastrostomy is a connection from the stomach to the skin, through a tube or button. It allows "enteral feeding" to be administered directly into the stomach, duodenum or jejunum.
The choice of size and type of gastrostomy feeding tube will depend on a number of factors, including the expected duration of feeding, the reason nutrition or access to the digestive tract is required, and the patient's condition and anatomy.
A low-profile or "button" is the most commonly used and preferred by patients due to the discreet nature of the feeding tube, there are no lengths of tubing to be caught on clothing, during physio or daily activities, as with PEG or G-Tubes.
The tube may be changed without any invasive procedures or return to hospital, (depending on local services) which can often be traumatic and challenging for both patients ans carers.
