  • A pivotal clinical decision to transform the patient care experience

“I was treating a patient with a complex medical condition who was suffering from persistent Candida infections.

Every silicone gastrostomy tube we placed ended up the same way: visible fungal colonization degraded the tube and often made it impossible to deflate the balloon.

Tube removals became painful and traumatic, as the fungal biofilm encrusted the balloon and compromised the very integrity of the silicone.

Despite several courses of fluconazole treatment, the cycle of failure, leaks, and patient discomfort continued.

The switch to the PURFIT™ polyurethane gastrostomy button was a game-changer. Within a few weeks, visual assessments of the tube showed no signs of fungal colonization, leaks at the stoma had completely disappeared, and the site showed clear signs of healing—all without requiring further pharmacological intervention.

Most importantly, the patient experienced real relief by avoiding repeated procedures and the associated discomfort, which significantly improved his overall care experience.

It was a rare and rewarding outcome: successfully eliminating both recurrent infection and device-related complications through a single effective clinical choice.”

The gastrostomy button is a device held in the stomach by an inflated balloon. A gastrostomy is a connection from the stomach to the skin, through a tube or button. It allows "enteral feeding" to be administered directly into the stomach, duodenum or jejunum.
