  • A pivotal clinical decision to transform the patient care experience

“I was managing a medically complex patient battling relentless Candida infections. Every silicone gastrostomy tube we placed ended the same way — fungal colonisation visibly degrading the tube and often making it impossible to deflate the balloon.

Tube removals became painful and traumatic, with fungal biofilm encrusting the balloon and compromising the integrity of the silicone itself.

Despite prescribing multiple courses of fluconazole, the cycle of failure, leakage, and patient discomfort continued.

Switching to the PURFIT polyurethane button was a game-changer. Within weeks, visual assessments of the tube showed no signs of fungal colonisation, stoma leakage had resolved completely, and the site exhibited clear evidence of healing — all achieved without the need for further pharmacological intervention. Most importantly, the patient experienced meaningful relief from repeated procedures and discomfort, significantly improving their overall care experience.

It was a rare and rewarding outcome to eliminate both the recurrent infection and the ongoing device-related complications with a single, effective clinical choice.”

The gastrostomy button is a device held in the stomach by an inflated balloon. A gastrostomy is a connection from the stomach to the skin, through a tube or button. It allows "enteral feeding" to be administered directly into the stomach, duodenum or jejunum.
